Dr. Eric Pyle, JMU geology professor visited the campus on October 22nd. The students were led by Dr. Pyle dressed in period costume as a surveyor from 1700s.

He brought all authentic period tools. He led them in two exercises - one was a mapping exercise of an area using a plane table and alidade and a chain, and the other making of road survey using a compass, poles, and a chain.

The goal was to make scale maps, and show innovative ways (in 1725!) of determining the area of an irregular polygon.

It was REALLY cool. They spent the morning doing the exercise and turned-in their scale maps for grading. The kids said they thoroughly enjoyed using their math skills to determine very accurately the acreage.
