Seussland welcomes students!

Students participate in Seussland

On October 4, 2018, the Governor's School of Southside Virginia welcomed more than 150 third grade students from seven feeder divisions to its annual outreach event. This year’s theme was Dr. Suess. There was an assortment of colorful, fun, and interesting hands-on booths that everyone could enjoy. These booths included educational activities that were coordinated with the third grade Standards of Learning.

Students were engaged in fun and educational science experiments based upon the different Dr. Suess books. For Horton Hatches An Egg students filled hollowed out eggs with confetti and then cracked the eggs to study physical changes, mass, and force. The Bartholomew and the Oobleck booth introduced students to the US system of measurements, how to form a hypothesis, and the distinct differences in the light spectrum.

At the If I Ran the Zoo station, students learned about categorizing animals by sorting out a mixture of animals into groups of herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores. At each booth, the GSSV students were all in costume, representing all the unforgettable characters from the variety of books written by Dr. Suess. This interdisciplinary event was instructional and entertaining while providing students and teachers a fun way to master the SOLs.
