Chemistry Olympiad

The Governor’s School of Southside Virginia participated in the American Chemical Society’s Chemistry Olympiad during March 2017 and were recently presented awards for their achievements. Thirteen schools competed in the Virginia Section and were categorized as small or large schools. GSSV Alberta was awarded First year Team Award as well as First year School Award! The Team award is given to the school with the highest combined total for five students, while the School award is presented to the school with the highest overall average.

Forty-three juniors took the first year exam and seven STEM juniors took the second year exam. Katherine Mosier (Park View – Alberta site) and Mitchell Davis (Charlotte – Keysville site) were the highest scoring individuals at their GSSV site for the first year exam. Jared Hensley (Amelia – Keysville site) scored the highest for the second year exam at the school. Out of the 347 students taking the first year exam, GSSV had four students that took top honors and received a gift certificate.

1st place – Katherine Mosier (Park View – Alberta)
2nd place – Reid Piercy (Park View – Alberta) and Jonathan Stanley (Park View – Alberta)
3rd place – James Cox (Nottoway – Alberta)

Jared Hensley (Amelia – Keysville) placed second high individual in the second year exam award and received a gift certificate.
